Trees - Sheffield

Origins of Needham's in Sheffield

In the origins section we focused on the derivation of the name and examined the two main places the Needham's are most likely to have come from; mainly Needham in Norfolk and High Needham in Derbyshire, It is clear that like those in the 21st century, children leave home. Thus over time the Needham's spread their wings and left the place they originated and moved around the country; see the distribution page.

Now we examine how the Needham's arrived in my home city of Sheffield. If you read how the Needham's came to Sheffield you realise that they all originated from outside the city as none were living in Sheffield at the end of the 17th century. As a consequence a great deal of effort has been expended identifying where the parents of the Needham children born in Sheffield originated and to identify their ancestors. Thus, to see their trees you need to find your ancestors in the Sheffield Family section where you will find the tree reference. Sounds complicated but it isn't really. Try it and see. Where I can't identify the origin of the family/person the tree is assigned to Sheffield. You will see there are a number of trees which reflects the the difficulty in identifying the origins of the various family lines. These pages must be looked at as work in progress and as more information becomes available the pages will be updated.

Trees - Sheffield

These are a series of trees based on the Sheffield Parish Records. The trees are identified by the oldest Needham in the tree and an associated Sheffield tree number. The tree numbers are cross referenced with the Sheffield family data; the same trees can be found on the Ancestry site.

The Needham SheffieldNGN is the administrators family tree; the oldest Needham in the tree was Matthew Needham thought to be born in Eckington in 1746. In addition a case study is made of the administrators family background detailing specifically where his paternal grandparents, the Needham's and Clapham's, originated from and where they lived in Sheffield. Plus there is an article on life in Sheffield in the 1920's and 30's largley based on George Needham's (1920--2010) experiences and how the Needham's of St Thomas Street were given a gold ring because of the healing powers of salve
