" HOPE is a township and village (once a market-town), in the parish of its name, in the same hundred as Castleton, about 1 mile from that town, and about 5½ N. from Tideswell. The moors in this parish have afforded, in many instances, extraordinary properties in the preservation of human bodies buried in them; some having been discovered, after thirty years' interment, perfect and free from decomposition."

It previously included before their transfer to Bradwell chapelry in 1868 Bradwell, Abney and Abney Grange, Grindlow, Hazelbadge, Greta Hucklow, Little Hucklow and part of Wardlow.

It also included most of Hope Woodlands prior to the transfer to  Derwent Woodlands, Derbyshire   and Fernilee prior to transfer to Buxton, Derbyshire and also nether Padley and Stoke prior to transfer to Eyam, Derbyshire The parish also include the chapelry of Fairfield, Derbyshire
